It is unquestionably an ambiguous project. The topmost question that I would ask myself after this project would be the following: can Milq-biased 6E5P to be as good (sound-wise) DC driver as some vintage direct heated tubes. I did ask thin question ...

Yes, Daniel, this resistor is somewhere between 30R and 100R, the value is not truly important. The purpose of the resistor is to slightly decouple the potentials of plate to grid, it cares no current and you might use 1/8W resistor or even less. BTW...

Well, as a prototype it might work but as the Milq sound
that I was implied the amp with no gas tubes in bias supply is not good in my
view. I never was satisfied the way how a regular 6E5P driver 6C33C. To me it
was very perfunctory and much unso...

Risking that the topic has already been discussed and that I postin a wrong category (Romy feel free to (re)move this post:Is there any sense in trying 6C33 at higher volatges and lower currents?More precisely, I've been wondering if 1/2 6C33 @ 300-...

I kind of disagree with Adrian. The wire, the coupling caps, the cathode resistors and many other things are superbly important but it is after the strategic topology is settled. In my view caps, resistor, wire and other things are responsible for th...

I have never used EL34 in triode, but I think it is not hard to find acceptable examples of this fast, reliable tube, and with conservative bias it should let your 6E5P "shine through", if that's what you want. Nothing like 811, 845, etc. in this re...

couldnt get "insert iamge from gallary" to work so i attached it. Had it working for a couple weeks. Single stage 6e5p testbed. The B+ rcore and output transformer is underneath. In the end r23 of 30k worked with 30h choke. no choke on gas tubes...
I see why you want those tap options now - essentially you want to be able to load down the 6e5p but still use all the secondary sections. There may be some frequency response variations in the ultrasonic range by playing the tap ga...
I am thinking of launching into building or rather having buitl by a techie friend a pair of melquiades. Could you tell me more about the cost of building a pair of these amps? then how do they compare to other amps? I mea...

Allo I tell you what it is that's putting everybody off, it's that bloody input stage biasing arrangement... The other thing is that people who know enough to build it have probably read a bunch of stuff here and there, and therefore been anointed in...
The builder regards VR1 more like an "offset to 0" adjuster than a bias control for the 6E5P since its working range is quite narrow. He asked me to know from you if along the 6E5P's lifespan it needs further adjustment...
|
Hi Cat,It seems the 6e5p is driving the transformer directly. I've used various versions of even simple mosfet followers to good effect at the headphone level, but never considered using a speaker level transformer. Did you and Dmitry cons...

That's very interesting. Looking at the Melquiades i've always wondered about a few things. If you don't mind, i will ask you about them:1. If you think gas regulators make sound of 6E5P so nice, didn't you try putting gas regulator tube in the grid ...

Hi Romy,Further to my earlier message, I've measured the bias voltages for the driver tubes in all Channels.A -4.3V not adjustableB -13.82V not adjustableC -4.8V not adjustableD -4.2V (ran out of potentiometer travel...may have to adjust a resistor)E...

Not having heard either the 1-stage 6E5P or the YO186 DHT, I can't comment on any comparison of imaging characteristics between any two circuit configurtions involving these tubes/circuits. All I can do is offer that DHT + good electricity can d...

Since I know about a few ongoing attempts out there by different people to build Melquiades I would like to share with some of my observations regarding corrections, simplification and possible modifications of Melquiades amplifier.
Obviously you ha...
The issue I see is that of intermodulation distortion on the biasing of the output tube. It will effectively change HF operating point per supply ripple. Easy to understand if one imagines a gross ripple of 50V.&nbs...
Which caps exactly did you decide to try? I don't recognize the big black jobbies. Are they oilers? Are they 200V?
I did not “decide” but went with what I had in my hands. They are the Ansars from the...

Welborne, I do not think
that I can give you an expert answer. You see, the gas tube biasing around 6e5p
was in a way an accident. It was something that made the 6e5p to sound very
interesting but I am not convinced that this type of biasing will ...

I'm thinking about trying to put together a Melquiades amplifier for myself. I printed out a copy of the schematic (thanks for sharing). I have a simple early question. Both the 12.6 and 6.3V windings for the filaments are shown as being center taped...
Hi Romy,So, six channels are now operational in the first DSET. By up I mean the anode voltages on all tubes is about right and the currents are in the ballpark of where they need to be. I am yet to check the DC Offset so hope...

My wording was bad. I am building zarathustra but am a long long way from completion. I do not have the capabilities to just whip one up. Yes the 6n1p was from the old days when i thought i had discovered good sound, i'm sure i still don't know(but...

R,Please excuse me if this is straying from the subject... feel free to move.Anyway, I was in NYC until Wednesday evening, and I assume I know what is motivating you to abandon Macondo/Melquiades in the hot summer months... what I don't understand is...

What do you know: have built another Melq monoblock and now I have a operational pair. They do fine, measure and sound identical. I did not close them up and keep them for now without the top and bottom cover as I will be doing a few minor adjustment...

Ok, the Headphone “Baby Melquiades” protect is over. Well, kind of over as there are some issues still are hanging in there.
A brief summary. The initial idea was to use the Melquiades’ input stage to drive headphones. Unfortunately it did not...

The 6sn7 is a fine amplification tube for use in preamps or gain stages, but it has way too high of an output impedance for driving power tubes. This is my personal preference. It also depends greatly on the topology. Maybe George u...

It is not to mention that 6n1p is not very good sounding
tube… It is interesting that you have built Zaratustra with gas driven 6e5p. I
do not feel that it is “most powerful fully pure class A amp in existence”.
Power is power and it is defiled th...

N-set, I understand you do not mean to hijack the thread with the Axiom, so I actually tried to make generic and/or thread-related observations. I don't know the 6E5P, but generic issues with specific DC tank circuits and driver and output tube stab...
